“…the two series of ‘Talks on Teaching Literature’ and ‘Talks on the Study of Literature,’ all of which are of permanent value, and delightful reading because of his critical ability, his high standard of purity in the use of our language, and his exhilarating freedom of thought and expression. Edward Robinson’s tribute to Arlo Bates published in the Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Arlo Bates was an American author, educator and newspaperman. He graduated from Bowdoin College and became the editor of the Boston Sunday Courier, and afterward became professor of English at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Both books are now re-published by Cosmo.
