The is a growing interest evinced in the study of the ancient history of South India and the want of a book, based on the authority of trustworthy literature as well as on the latest researches is keenly felt. Ancient Dekhan has a special charm about it as nature had kept this region, for a longtime, free from foreign aggressions, due mainly to its isolation and natural protection. The institutions of ancient Dekhan, social and political were never interfered with, prior to the waves of the Muhammedan invasions which took place in the 14th century. Four most important dynasties of ancient South India which played significant role in the social and political set-up have been dealt with here viz; The Pallava, The Pandya, the Chola and the Kakatiya. The book opens with the ancient history of Canjevaram, giving genealogical descriptions down to the Vijayanagara kings. Subsequent chapters deal with the history of the above dynasties which formed a Telugu feudatory family. The book concludes with a very rewarding chapter on the ancient polity of Dekhan.
In collecting and publishing these contributions, the author did a commendable job and tremendous service to the students and scholars of South Indian History. It is hoped that the book will be well received by the scholars.
