Prehistoric South India

South Indian history and culture has a character of its own not withstanding the fact that the interaction of cultural forces between the North and the South is very much full and frequent than has hitherto been recognized. Despite this constant and almost continuous influences, it is possible to distinguish the special features in the course of cultural developments which are ascribable to South Indian influence. An attempt is made here to describe a few of the main contributions and the treatment is historical in character. The scope and the depth of research done by the author in various fields of South Indian historical research, impact of religious movements, rise of the more important dynasties, commerce and navigation and the administration, is extremely interesting from all aspects. Prof. Aiyangar has divided his book in 19 chapters some of which reads as: The beginning of South India. History and Brahmanism in Tamil land, the Kural, the rise and early history of the Pallavas, Literature of Saivism, Vaishnavism in South India, Muhammadam invasions, the character and significance of Vijaynagar Empire, Greater India, Expansion of India beyond the seas, Administrative evolution in South India, connection with Ceylon, South India as a seal or orthodox Hinduism. The study is based on the author’s researches from archives, manuscripts and contemporary records and is bound to give a new look to the study of South India and its contribution to Indian Culture in various fields.
