This book brings together the languages of the Non-Aryan tribes and peoples who dwell within or border upon the Indian territories. According to the author, these languages form broken and scattered fragments of unrecorded world which was before the dispersion of the Indo-Germanic stock. It unearths the pre-historic races that inhabited this land. This was perhaps the first serious attempt at discovering and investigating, in a formal manner, the languages of the original inhabitants of the country.
Steingass, Francis Joseph. A Comprehensive Persian-English dictionary, including the Arabic words and phrases to be met with in Persian literature
Nobody could have done more justice to this dictionary then Francis Joseph Steingass who was a British linguist and orientalist of German Jewish descent. He completed his education, including the Ph.D., in Munich, Germany. Later he was professor of Modern Languages at Birmingham, Professor of Modern Languages and Resident Lecturer on Arabic Languages, Literature & Law at the Oriental Institute, Working. He knew 14 languages, including Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit. He published a number of Persian-English, Arabic-English and English-Arabic dictionaries. This is perhaps the reason for the immense popularity of this dictionary for a very long time.
