The study of any branch of art supposes some acquaintance with the history of the people among whom the art was practices. This applied with additional force to China and to Chinese Art, a still more distant and less familiar field off study. While may ancient civilizations of the works have culminated and disappeared below the horizon, China has continued to exist, to work out its own ideas of art and ethics. The author, who spent thirty years in Peking, presents here an inquiry into the exact illustration and description of the typical objects with references to their source of information calculated to throw light upon their origin and association. Not confining to only selected areas, the author has investigated systematically into almost all the aspects of Chinese Art. Sculpture, Architecture, Bronze, Carving on wood, Ivory, Rhinoceros Horn, Lacquer, Jade, Pottery and Porcelain, Glass, Enamels, Jewelry, Textiles, Silks, Carpets and a host off other magnificently exotic arts have been recorded and systematically explained by the author. The investigation gains all the more value as it has been profusely illustrated with more than 240 plates. The book is truly a descriptive catalogue of the most rare pieces of art in all forms of rare aesthetic quality, which now can be recognized. The book in tow volumes shall be a rich source of study for the student and scholar, and shall be equally interesting for the tourist and the collector.
