The book `New Era of Indian Archaeology’ owes its title to late Sir Mortimer Wheeler, who introduced a new technique in the field of Indian Archaeology, besides military discipline and strategic planning. Wheeler held the post of Director General in the Archaeological Survey of India for a limited period of four years (1944-48), but within such a short span he could make a deep impact on the archaeologists, particularly in the field of excavation. He published a book `Archaeology from the Earth’ incorporating principal aspects of excavation. The book, no doubt from a stalwart like Wheeler, was not very valuable for an Indian archaeologist, primarily because of the foreign context. A book dealing with all the aspects of field archaeology in an Indian context was, therefore, the need of the hour.
The present volume from the hands of an Indian archaeologist, who has specialised in the subject by toiling in the field right through his life will fill up the long-standing vacuum.
