Century is an epoch-making period in Indian history. During this period the waves of the Indian Nationalist movement swept over different states of India leaving maximum impact on Calcutta which was its pivotal centre. Lakshminath Bezbaruah; who had been pursuing his higher studies in Calcutta in this period of national upheaval was brought within the influence of this movement. His English education opened up new vista to peep through the works of the great romantic poets of England and their works as well as those of famous Bengali litterateurs like Rabindranath Tagore, Dwijendralal Roy Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and Michael Madhusudan Dutt.
These works inspired him, to wield his mighty pen to resuscitate the Assamese Language and Literature. The tapestry of multicolored Assamese culture and tradition provided him with source materials to enrich his literary works which he used as a clarion call to rouse the people of his State from their stupor. This book is an attempt to evaluate the contributions of this doyen of Assamese literature towards the growth and development of Assamese literature.
