Crime in India

This book is not an exhaustive survey of the crime committed year by year in India. Such a work would be extraordinarily dull. The author, a ranking officer of the British Indian Police force, has portrayed the story of the major offences common in India, endeavoring to illustrate their nature, frequency and special characteristics by concrete cases, chosen from the annual official reports of crime during his service. The author has drawn pointed attention on the gulf which lies between the aspirations of the Indian Intelligentsia and the mental and moral outlook of the general body of the population. In compiling this volume, it serves to enlighten on the important part played by the Indian police, under their European superintendents and Indian officers, during the grave disorder years of the Raj.
