The Setu and Rameswaram by N. Vanamamalai Pillai was published in 1921. It has subsequently been out of print. Cosmo is pleased to reprint this great work of Indian heritage and its beliefs. The book establishes the sanctity of the “Setu,” which is Rama’s bridge described in the Ramayana of Valmiki. The Setu was built for the vast armies of Rama to cross over to the then Lanka island for the destruction of Ravana. According to the great Indian epic, the bridge was constructed with the help of vanaras (the mythical monkeys) and was designed by the two divine builders – Nala and Neel – both of whom directed the construction of the Setu as well.
The Setu is a natural formation between India and Sri Lanka. Being a divine creation, the Setu is as much a creation of Rama, the incarnation of Vishnu. It is a part of our heritage and deserves to be protected for all time.
