Since 1842, when Friedrich Spiegel published the first English edition of a Pali text, the interest taken in the life and teachings of Buddha has been keen and marked. Through the labours of scholars like Turner, D’Alvis, Cowell, Childers, Fausboll, Oldenberg, Hardy, Kern, and Rhys Davids, to name a few, great and steady progress has been made to understand the teachings of Buddha and in the interpretation of all the Sacred books of his Canons. In this book, the Sayings or Logis of Buddha are translated for the first time into an occidental language and it is gratifying that Dr. Moore has accomplished the task of making them accessible.
The ITI-VUTTAKA is one of the Canonical books of Buddhism and is placed in the second grade division of the Pitakas, and is a free rendering, in English of Sayings of Buddha. The book is divided into one hundred and twenty sections, each, partly in prose and verse. The book is a collection of ethical teachings of Buddha on a variety of moral subjects. Passion, anger, pride, lust and other shortcomings of body, world and thought are inveighed against and deprecated. Friendliness, charity, virtue, modesty and truth are the good qualities which the master inculcates. The plentiful citation of the obscurer Pail words will enable the reader to use this translation for comparative purposes by the side of other translation of Pali texts.
