“The present work is a companion volume of the earlier published book, “A Sketch of the Religious Sects of the Hindus” by the same author. Prof. Wilson, compiled both these volumes together and like the other volume the lectures and essays comprised in this volume, were also published in the Asiatic researches volume XVI and various issues of Royal Asiatic Society in the year 1828-1848.
To collect the material for this volume also, the author had to consult a variety of manuscript sources in different languages and dialects of India, From his own rich collection and form the collection of East India House and the Bodleian Library.
The book is divided in different chapters like, ‘The Religious practices and opinions of the Hindus’, ‘Civil and Religious Institutions of the Sikhs; ‘The Religious Festivals o the Hindus’, ‘Religious summaries of the different sects of Nepal’, ‘On Buddha and Buddhism’ and an ‘account of the Religious Innovations attempted by Emperor Akbar’ etc., etc., The book has a comprehensive index and it is hoped that this handy volume shall be of immense use to the students and scholars, interested on the diversity of religious sections of the most ancient race.
