The purpose and intent of this three volume work meant for the for the Primary Teachers can best be described in the words of Francis W. Parker ?
?A prominent mission of the country is to teach children how things are done.
Here we come upon a new function for the teachers in our elementary schools and, in my judgment; they have no function more important. The teachers of the elementary schools ought to sort the pupils and sort them by their evident or probable destinies. The very best thing a teacher can do for a child is to tell him or her in what line he or she can have the most successful and the happiest life.
We must confirm to nature in regard to the training of our children; we must guide each child into that path in life in which he can be most successful and happy. The child enters into industrial commercial activity and the life of the world through his hands and brains. He has very little interest in general in things outside of his own environment, until that interest is stimulated through the work of his hand.?
This book comprises a complete plan for teaching the young students through the year on exactly these basis, laying down a roadmap for a wholesome and vibrant study program.
