This is a review of number lore by W. Wynn Westcott, an esoteric author of the 19th century. Westcott includes information on the Pythagoreans and the Kabbalah. The main portion of this book includes a series of chapters dealing with every larger numbers. Westcott had a grasp a wide range of occult correspondences, and this short book includes rare snippets of information from all major ancient sources, including the Romans, Chaldeans, Egyptians, Hindus, Mediaeval Magicians, Hermetic Students and the Rosicrucian.

The principles that govern the numbers should be the principles of all true existence; and because numbers are the main components of the mathematical sets and at the same time represent many analogies to different realities, it was deduced that the elements of the numbers were the elements of the realities.

Pythagoras himself is believed to have owed him the first teaching on the properties of numbers, the principles of music, and physics to the inhabitants of Europe; but there are indications that he had visited Central Asia and had obtained the mathematical ideas that form the basis of his teaching there.

“Numbers are a key to the ancient views of cosmogony—in its broad sense, spiritually as well as physically considered and to the evolution of the present human race; all systems of religious mysticism are based upon numerals.” ― W. Wynn Westcott, Numbers Their Occult Power And Mystic Virtues
