“The present book will henceforth be known therefore as “The Makers of Modern Poetry,” and the generic title of “The Makers of Modern English” will appear on the title-page of each volume. This is not so much an after-thought as the fulfilment of my first design, which was to write a popular guide to the great masters of modern literature, whether poets or prose-writers. The close of the century seems appropriate for the fulfilment of this long-delayed design. One more volume, on “The Makers of Modern Fiction,” I hope yet to write. If I am able to accomplish this, my work, such as it is, in criticism will be closed ; and for the complete trilogy the old title of “The Makers of Modern English” will not be inappropriate”.
