Richard Temple the author of a large number of books on India and joint editor of the world famous “Indian Antiquary” has compiled a journal of his many visits and stays in Hyderabad, Kashmir, Sikkim and Nepal in these two volumes. His long stay in Hyderabad as resident gave him an ample opportunity to study the politics, administration and history of the dominions of Hyderabad state which is not found in any other contemporary work. His journal which he kept in Jammu & Kashmir gives us not only a deep, comprehensive and contemporary accounts of the exceedingly complicated geography and history of the mountain territories of this state but its administration, the ancient, medieval and modern history and its mineral wealth. While Lt. Governor of Bengal, he visited the states of Sikkim and Nepal where, by virtue of his political status he could study every aspect of administration being run by the contemporary Governments. He made a deep study of Buddhism of the Himalayas as practiced in Sikkim and Nepal. Both the volumes are fully illustrated with plates from all these states.
