Human Resources Management in Libraries

Human Resource Development (HRD) is the need of the hour in any University Library that wants to be dynamic and growth oriented or to succeed in a fast-changing environment. The immediate cause of the poor image of many University Libraries is lack of HRD policies and practices to the extent it is desirable, inadequate funding, low pay scales little or no consideration for colleagues among various units of the library and lack of dynamic leadership. India has an abundance of human resources but how to impart quality to its vast human resources is a challenging task facing India. Like in other organisations there is a necessity for systematic development of human resources in University Libraries also. In India the library profession did not attract the best talent in the country for a variety of reasons. There were no organised attempts to assess the value of professionals working in libraries, with the recent growth of library consciousness in the country people have begun to realize the importance of human resources for librarianship and of maintaining adequate standards in this regard. Well-motivated persons with good academic records and professional qualifications, innovation capability and managerial ability will contribute towards success of the library. This publication deals with a detailed study of library professional’s awareness to the concept of HRD and will be of great importance to academics, researchers, managers of libraries and information systems.
