The present volume undertaken by two famous art photographers, Pierre Rambach and Vitold de Marie-Golish, presents sculptures and temples from the fifth to the thirteenth century, in the Deccan, central, and eastern India. The views presented are admirably suggestive of the settings of the temples in the landscape and also their contemporary state of use or decay.
This book was somewhat of a trendsetter presenting Indian temples and their sculptures in an artistically laid out manner where the presentation of the plates was as important as the plate itself. The presentation of plates in this fashion set the stage for almost all the books produced especially in the West thereafter, to publish all art books related to India in an album style, especially those meant for general readers and foreign and Indian tourists. The present edition of the book includes many colour plates which have been as artistically rendered as was the original work completely in monochrome.
