Dharma Dynamic was written when the author was a poet graduate student of Oxford. Under the influence of his tutor, Dr. R.K. Jain, McCall has attempted to develop what he believes to be a better model for understanding life in village India, particularly with reference to jati and jajmani relationship. After a detailed consideration of the material on caste and village India, during which the major theorists in the field are discussed, the author turns his attention to the indigenous concept “DHARMA”, not for its religious meaning, but for the implications that such a concept might have for researching and understanding life in India today. One of the main points “Dharma Dynamic” is that for some time alien concepts have been imposed by outsider government and outsider researches on the interpretation of life on the sub-continent. Dharma Dynamic seeks to discuss this in the context of exchange theory and research strategies. The publishers feel immense pleasure in issuing this volume of particular importance and hope that discussion and debate can take place amongst those people most concerned with the sometimes controversial issues the author raised in the text.
