The book written by “The First Lady of Education”, as named by Clifton L. Hall (in his article on Maria Montessori published in History of Education Journal, Vol. 4, No. 4 (Summer, 1953), pp. 124-128), comprises the lectures given by her in the University of Rome, during a period of four years, all of which were diligently preserved by one of her students, Signor Franceschetti. Professor Giuseppe Sergi, author’s master, who, after having urged her to turn her anthropological studies in the direction of the school, recommended her as a specialist in the subject; and her free university course for students in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Medicine was established, in pursuance of his advice, by the Pedagogic School of the University of Rome.
