About the Book
Today, after the successful completion of elections in Kashmir and the assumption of power by the National Conference, the time has come to view in retrospect all that led to this event and also to raise a few questions regarding the status of the Kashmir problem after the elections. This most timely and well researched book, by a veteran journalist, attempts to do just this. All the crucial events leading to genesis of the Kashmir problem, the role of terrorism and Pakistan’s proxy war, the games played by political powers on both sides of the Indo-Pak border have been discussed with keen analytical insight. This includes recent events like the kidnapping of foreign tourists, setting fire to Chara-e-Sharif, the bomb blast on Republic Day and numerous other acts of heinous terrorism unleashed on the state. This is the first work to focus on the 1996 Assembly elections, giving all the details of the elections and their results.

Backed by solid information and keen political rationality, this book attempts to answer important questions related to the future, of what kind of stability and peace we expect in this region. Richly supplemented with documentary data, facts and figure, this volume will provide invaluable material to political analysts, journalists, historians and the public whose interest has never waned from this beauteous but tragic region of India.
